The renovation of this space was commissioned by Friends of the East River Esplanade. They wanted to beautify a sitting area and riverfront access point next to a busy entrance to the FDR drive.

The design goal was to create an attractive space that blocked the view of the traffic from the esplanade. The plant selection included tough, low maintenance plants that could survive drought and deal with harsh temperatures and intense reflective light.
